For my 19th #30IN30 post, I wanted to share my
thoughts after going to see Sparkle. When
I saw that this was coming out in summer I definitely marked my calendar! Seeing the list of cast, I knew there would be
the potential for a lot of strong performances and some wild card surprises by
those I didn’t know or for first time film performer Jordin Sparks. Sidebar: I saw Jordin on Broadway for In the Heights a few years back and was
thoroughly impressed by her live singing skills and her acting as well.
It was emotional of course to see Whitney Houston in what
was her last film as she played her role well and with heartfelt conviction as
the matriarch to the three daughters played by Tika Sumpter, Jordin Sparks and
Carmen Ejogo. After having seen the
original a few years back, this definitely was different but I was open to
those changes. Director Salim Akil has now made two good films, Jumping the Broom and this film. I was
most moved by the performance of Carmen Ejogo as “Sister,” which was powerful
and although set in the past, still a timely lesson on domestic violence and
addiction. She definitely has a bright future and I look forward to seeing her
next role. Mike Epps was the other impressive actor in this film as “Satin” comedian
and Sister’s husband. Mr. Epps definitely has impressed lately while he was a
positive voice in Jumping the Broom,
he was an extremely flawed in this film but still had flashes of truth
throughout his screen time. Jordin
Sparks as “Sparkle” was an inspirational character to me personally and the
spirit of her gift as a writer/performer and her persistence in one scene with
a record executive was priceless.
